In Essen, West Germany Province.

Chad arrived in Hamburg and stayed there a day or two. He was transferred to Essen which is just outside Dusseldorf which is not in his mission. Go figure. Dussuldorf is in the Frankfurt Mission. Essen is an industrial city of 600,000 in the most populated area of Germany. His companion is Elder Lewis. He is as far away as you can get from the mission home. The Good news is he probably is in the Dortmund zone which is the zone that the older couple that Devry is now related to resides. Hopefully, we can see some photos on their blog in the future. His P-day is on Mondays. If you email him, you need to do it on Sundays as there is a 9 hour difference. His email address is: chadarnett@myldsmail.net. Here are some pics that the mission president sent today. He is from SLC and was a bigshot with IHC.

Just a couple of other things since I know this is what everybody reads anyway. We got to talk to him in Paris at the airport. He was tired and said he was really scared. His mission president emailed and said that the assistants picked his group up at the airport and rode the train back into Hamburg. While on the train they were taught how to contact train passengers and were expected to do so during the ride into Hamburg. Rewind just a second back to us talking to Chad in Paris. I told him he was much better prepared than I ever was. When we got off the plane in Adelaide (after 21 hours of total flying) they took us directly to a square in the downtown area. Adelaide is a city of 1 million. They handed us a clipboard and told us to start street contacting. We had to do it for 4 hours. I had no idea what I was doing or what I was doing in Australia. I was shaking, more like trembling with fear. I pretended to try to contact business people. I had one guy tell me to get out of the way. I started to cry. I then went and found the largest building I could and hid around the corner for 4 hours. No one noticed I was gone. I was sobbing behind the building, scared out of my mind. What was I doing in Australia? I had no idea what I was doing or what I had gotten myself into. Talk about wanting to go home. Finally I sneeked back into the crowd of missionaries (there were 15 of us) and we went off to the mission office. Anyway, Chad is far more prepared than I ever was. But, I made it through only with a slight facial tick that acts up every now and then when I'm asked to feed the missionaries.

He looks great. I would worry if he wasn't a little scared. The Lord will bless him and magnify him and protect him. He'll be a wonderful missionary. We're all so proud of him!

Well I remember 40 years ago being let off a bus 13 miles from town at two in the morning with an elder who barely spoke the language...we tried to hitchhike into town but there wasnt any traffic...so we started walking the 13 miles ...at two in the morning...and it was winter...I wondered if this would pass...we finally got a ride on a type of dune buggy and got to the apt. and the elders said "lets go" I was miffed.
