A couple of questions and then a comment. Is the iron rod spoken of in Lehi's dream a one dimensional object or is it multi-deminsional? Can you let go of the iron rod and get back on where you would have been had you not let go? Just some questions as we prepare for the Sabbath.
My film recommendation..."A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". Rent it, or own it. It's in Black and White. My abstract attempt to illustrate what it's all about is shown here.

Just thought I'd comment on your questions regarding the "Iron rod". I believe, it is a dimensional rod, not linear except in one sense to be discussed below.
It has width and depth and as long as your holding on to any portion of it you are protected from the mirky water and those that would mock in the great and spacious building. I also believe the rod is fluid, a moving entity that winds it's way through would be falsehoods which lead to heartbreak. While the path may be narrow and straight, the "iron rod", may weave its way incrementally from side to side on that path and on occasion come perilously close to the edge. That's why we must clutch tightly to it with our eyes focused on the "tree" ahead.
With regard to where we attach back to the rod, after leaving it due to transgression, I think that only in this case can the rod be considered linear. We cannot re-attach ourselves to the rod where we would have been had we not ever left it. We must go back to where we left it, and there continue on the path. For if not there, where? Would it be fair to those that never faltered, never lost their grip -- so to speak, if we could just grab hold as if we did no wrong. Say it not so. Justice demands it. And, so it is written.
